IH 584 clutch

Hello, I have a 584 that I just bought. the former owner did not grease the clutch travel shaft and now the clutch pedal will not return to up/engaged position unless pulled up. The grease fitting to the clutch shaft is frozen up and I can not pump grease. any ideas on how to repair this? The grease fitting fits into a round plug that is on side of trans case. does any one know how to remove this plug?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Unscrew the fitting and probe the hole to remove as much clotted grease as possible. Then use carb cleaner to to rinse out even more. (protect the paint from carb cleaner) Pump grease through the fitting when it is not installed. Install it and grease the fitting. Jim

Thanks for quick reply. I will try the carb cleaner. Would you suggest something like WD40 or penetrating oil after clean out? Is it possible to get oil on the clutch plate if I use too much?
Thanks again.

Hi Glenn, the 584 depending when it was made could
have a self adjusting clutch where the clutch
release bearing always rides on the pressure plate
fingers. My brother's 495 had this clutch and the
release bearing started squealing about 3 years
after he bought it. When we did a clutch job we
returned it to the old style with the return
spring to pull the clutch pedal up so the release
bearing stops turning.

See regular clutch at:

Self adjusting:

search.html#epc::mr52557ar374332

Major difference is item #10 return spring on self
adjusting clutch holds clutch pedal down so
release bearing is always turning and on standard
clutch item #10 clutch return spring holds clutch
pedal up so release bearing does not contact
pressure plate fingers and does not turn when
clutch is engaged.

Also item #3 can stick on item #5 with
accumulation of clutch dust and dirt. There is no
lubrication points within clutch housing but
inspection plate at bottom can be removed and the
workings can be observed.

Hope this helps

WD40 is not really a lube, and dries to nothing with time. After the carb cleaner, and before it dries, putting the fitting back in and greasing it will drive some of the cleaner into the old grease packing the bearing. Jim
