Timing Super A Engine - Where is the Pointer???

Just curious why the Super A engine I'm working on (and 2 others I have looked at recently) doesn't have a pointer on the front engine cover to line up the timing marks on the crankshaft fan pulley. I have a Cub tractor and it has a pointer where you line up the notches on the pulley to when timing it.

I just got the engine back on the Super A and got it running. I would like to check and adjust timing if necessary by using the timing marks on the front fan pulley....but there is not a pointer. It would also be nice to be able to use a timing light to fine tune.

Any feedback on this is appreciated.

Well, there is a timing mark, its on your flywheel. There is a pointer, its on the back of the bell housing inspection plate. These marks are use for "static" setting of the timing. If you prefer you can set the static timing, then rotate the distributor back a forth to find a sweet spot. You know, when you get into certain areas of maintenance, its nice to have a manual.

design engineers are jokers, ain't they?

"Let's make everybody lay in the mud"

"How about making them turn the hand crank handle until the impulse snaps, and have the mark underneath so they can't see it at the same time"

"How about pulley marks with no pointer"

"How about pulley marks and a pointer, but on the opposite side from the distributor, so the timing light cord will get caught in the fan, and they won't be able to turn the distributor while watching the light."

funny fellas.
Find wherever they put the marks, and then make your own on the pulley and cover....

yeah....our front crank fan pulley has 3 different timing marks on it and no pointer!!! What purpose do those marks serve? Yeah I was reading where there is a mark on the flywheel. We know how to time it by ear and have put it on TDC and all. Just wanted to use a timing light and check the marks to get it "perfect".
