Cub offset PTO question

I am thinking about buying a Cub to pull a small hay tedder (10ft, two reels). It looks in all of the pictures like the Cub PTOs are offset to the left--does that matter? I usually pull the tedder with a Super C which has the normal centered PTO.

You do know the Cub PTO turns backward form the C. I would turn the tedder backwards to see it it will work try and turn it both ways then you would know if it will work on the Cub.The tedder probably will run in reverse if its on the Cub but it is easy to just turn the shaft both ways to see.

Whoa, thanks, I didn't know that about the PTO running in reverse. I think the tedder would spin either way, but it would be deadly to actually run it in reverse. Yikes!

Different size PTO's too? This is sounding like a bad plan. Maybe I'll just get another C. I know that works!

PTO on the cub smaller plus it is not even the normal splines like most if has like 21 splines. Not the exact number but an example and they are what would be termed a fine splines shaft

Cub PTO turns the other way because it is direct drive from the crankshaft. Ergo, if you run engine at 1200rpm , that is also PTO speed. The only way to get it down to 540rpm is to run engine at slow idle, or a reduction box/pulley setup.

Bad plan! Cub is only 10 HP. PTO Turns at engine speed so no good way to get 540 RPM for the Tedder. PTO turns opposite direction to normal PTO. PTO shaft is smaller than standard and will not hook up to your Tedder. The offset of the PTO would not matter as PTO shaft on Tedder is usually long so that U joins would easily handle the offset. You can easily find another C on the cheap that will do your job. Plenty of Cs out there.

Cub PTO is 15/16 inch pitch diameter, 10 tooth involuted spline and as other have stated it turns counter clockwise at engine speed. (approx 1,000 RPM)
Standard PTO is 1 3/8 6 spline that turns 540 RPM clockwise.

To use the Tedder would require an adapter to mate PTO to tractor and you would still be turning the Tedder twice the rated speed in the wrong direction of rotation. Probably not a good idea if would even work.

Tisco at one time made a adapter to adapt standard shaft to PTO, not sure still available. Hub City at one time made a rotation reverser and speed reducer but they are very rare, if impossible to find.

Odd question. Would it be worth the trouble to adapt a, say oliver 66 PTO gearbox to the back of a Cub, driven off the transmission, replacing the cub PTO unit? That would give you 540 rpm, and an easy way to turn it on and off. i toyed with the idea back whan I had a Cub. I thought it would be nice for a sprayer pump or to run an elevator.

The Cub PTO was driven direct from the engine so it did turn "bassackwards". The Oliver PTO was also driven direct from the engine, but it was geared to reverse it to clockwise rotation and 540 RPM.

There have been a couple of different PTO reversers available for the Cub over the years. But they are far and few between these days, and VERY expensive when they come up for sale.

Adapting an Oliver 66 PTO would work if you have the tools and know-how.

Still, you're working with 10HP at best here, and unless you have some really flat ground and light hay, you may not have enough power to run the tedder. I know a 4-basket tedder is enough to make a stout 400 grunt in heavy 1st cutting hay, especially on the hills.

Looking around on eBay I saw a Hub City Cub PTO reverser for $600 that looks like it does two things: 1) converts 10 spline to 6, and 2) reverses spin direction ... that company apparently had a model that also stepped down the RPM's to 540, so in theory it might do that too--but you can't tell from the picture.

Is it worth it? Not for me: the hp issue can't be resolved, so I did not buy the Cub I was looking at--I bought a a Super C this week (double the hp for the same price).
