With this engine having dry sleeves, is dropping the oil pan a waste of time?
Where should a person take the head to get it checked out, to see if it is the cause of this problem?
What should a person look for as to indicate where the leak is happening? Besides the obvious big cracks and holes?
Thank you

yep , good place to start. once pan is off set cardboard on floor overnight as leak may be slow. look up around sleeves for leak. can be a crack in block bore between sleeve.
no sense pulling head till the bottom end is eliminated.

Would there be any benefit of having the engine up to operating temperature before dropping the pan?

If you don't find any leakage after pulling the pan I would pull the head to see if the gasket is blown. If the gasket looks ok I would have the head magna-fluxed to see if its cracked. Hal

If you have access to a coolant system pressure checker, you can add a few (And I MEAN ONLY A FEW) pounds of pressure on the entire cooling system. and it will help in the process of finding the leak.Like I say,DO NOT over do it! Get underneath the crank case with a good light and start carefully looking.

It should help to show it with out the need of the engine "warmed up". ;)

agree
pulling the pan is usually first and easiest.
takes patience and a few days sometimes, but you will find the leak.
good time to pull a rod cap and see how much damage that antifreeze did to the bearings if it was ran at all.

even with dry sleeves, ya never know till you look.
recently had one with a cracked sleeve, with a matching block crack under the sleeve = antifreeze in the oil.

Yes, dropping the pan is the best place to start. I have had a couple of these engines with cracks in the block behind the a sleeve. With the pan off, I was able to see droplets of coolant coming from the bottom edge of the offending sleeve. For what it is worth, I have never had one with a blown head gasket.
