IH 1086 needs engine

I have an IH 1086 that needs an engine overhaul, or, preferably, a used engine if I can find a decent one. I was told by one of the salvage yards that it has a 436 engine and something out of a 1460 combine would work with minimal parts to swap out. Other info that I am finding says the 1086 came out with a 414 engine. Can someone steer me in the right direction? If it is factory with a 414.....will a 436 go in? What combine models (or other machines) would have a suitable replacement engine?
Thanks

986 non turbo
1486 turbo
1440 combine non turbo
1460turbo
eaely 1640s and 1660s before the merger with case
and i think the 1466s
just some food for thought the 414s start alot better than the 436s i live in se. minn. and haul corn with the 1086 and combine with a 1440 and on cool days in the fall the 1086 will pop right off while the 1440 has to be plugged in for a while

The 436 natural aspirated is a different beast from a 436 turboed engine and yes , the natural does start much harder due to the differences. Also, the DT 414 is factory for 1086.

Have you pulled the pan to look at the crank in your 1086? If the crank mics OK maybe you could consider doing an in frame? I did an in frame of my 1086 at 10000 hours and at that time the crank measured out at factory specs. It has 6500 hours of mostly hard work on the in frame and uses no oil and starts real well and the oil pressure is great.

The head could get real expensive if valves and seats need to be replaced so that's an unknown. If you are able to do engine work yourself, mic the crank and pull the head and send it to a machine shop to have it checked out. If you can get by with a simple valve grind and resurfacing and the crank is OK an in frame won't be very spendy. If the crank is out of specs and the head needs valves and seats the dollars will add up to probably more than the cost of a used engine. Remember, a used engine is just that-a used engine. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing. Jim

I'm in eastern Ia and have a1460 engine that I overhauled a few years before the combine wore out I removed the engine last winter and saved it as we scraped the combine send me a note if your interested

414, 436, 466 are all the same block externally. The main difference between the three is the length of the stroke.

You could even pull a DT466 out of a dump truck and put it in your tractor if you wanted. Just unbolt the truck parts and bolt on the tractor parts from the old 1086 engine.
