OT: Any Woodshop Guys Out There?? - Need Advice

We just built some board and batten shutters for the house (it just got repainted) and I would like to apply a combo sealer and stain to them. We have 20 shutters and I would like to use my Home Depot HVLP Spray Gun (1.4 tip) that I use on my tractors. The shutters are made out of some cedar that we had cut up from a bandsaw mill years ago.

My question is what do I need to be able to spray them with the HVLP gun? Any special nozzle tips required for stain or any other additives needed?? Will it even work?

Can't help you with the spray gun - but would tell you that if you're going for a solid color stain, be sure you use a good primer.

Cedar has tannins that will stain through.

They'll do that of course with non-solid color stains, which may be fine - really depends on the look you're going for.

The UV resistance of the material is a prime factor in your choice. Cedar will silver out easily and make a mess if the material degrades in the sun. There are very good UV resistant coatings. Bear, Sherwin Williams, and PPG all make suitable material. (get it from a paint store, not Big Box)
Take a scrap, and apply material in the store to assure color and penetration. Jim

You probably don't want to hear this, but the best thing to do, in my opinion, is brush it on. When I was a kid we had a cedar deck and gazebo we would stain+seal every year. Tried different spraying methods, never seemed to work that well. Gonna sound like a grumpy old man here, but you do really need to "brush it in" good. Cedar is very coarse grain. When you spray it, it seems like stain will just run off before it gets a chance to soak in. If you spray you end chasing yourself with a brush to point that you'll wonder why you're spraying in the first place.

I don't know what kind of look you're going for, but if you don't mind it being glossy, I'm a big fan of automotive clear coat. Stain them the color you want, then spray clear coat over top. Will outlast ANY exterior varnish/sealer on the market and provide excellent UV fade protection.

Thanks for all of the help guys. We have done some research and thinking about going with Cabot Stain. We just want a dark brown color/finish. Don't care if they are glossy or not as the house is a cedar shake siding that used to be hunter green and we have recently changed the color after 50 years to a meduim brown. Could probably put the shutters up bare with nothing on them, but would like to put a stain color on them.

I made some out of cedar almost 30 years ago and I
layed them flat and used my spray gun and set it so
it sprayed a heavy coat and had at it. On these I
made a a cutout of tulips in the center of each one
and then did an under lay of green for the leaves
and red for the flower. They still look real good
yet today and have never been redone. I use a clear
deck finish on the shutters and use rust oleum on
the colors. I was real happy that they are lasting
the way they are

After you"ve stained it and allowed it to dry get some spar urethane and brush it on. You could spray it but it seals and adheres better if you brush it on. Spar urethane is what is used on ships like sailboats and is meant for wood and will stand up to weather, tried and true.

Neighbor paints houses for a living. Airless spraying any kind
of stain sealer, it gets wet rolled for better penetration &
longevity.

I changed the color of my house- was 1/2 cedar, 1/2 stone, from a brown to a white, and made it a Tudor style look. It took 3 coats brushed on. Was my summer project.

I used my spray gun to paint my vinyl shutters in 1997 using Sherwin Williams best latex paint. I would use a good primer on wood. A spray gun will put paint where a brush won't. It's a lot faster too. My shutters still look good after 17 years and no peeling. Their Duration paint will last a long time. Hal
