Improving disc brake housing on SH

I am not getting good braking on my 2 SH's. I have
a 300 that will stop on a dime. The one SH is lucky
to stop on an acre. Can The wear surface of the
brake housing be built up so that it quickly makes a
forceful contact? I am familiar with the practice of
milling the face of housing to increase contact. The
discs are excellent.

The linning can get glazed and needs to be roughed up. When going back together flip the discs 180 so they turn the opposite direction. Also check the balls. Those are suggestions for disc brakes if you still have the bands check the linning for wear glazing and oil leaking from the input shaft.

The best brakes happen when the clearance between the two fixed friction surfaces (when the brake is released) is about .030 to .050". When the expander pulls the balls way out in the grooves, the linkage is at a bad angle.
Machine off the mounting surface of the drum shaped housing to close up the space to that range. The expander should be fully relaxed when checking. Jim

Question for the experts is this how you would check for the clearance? Pic attached.
Clearance is .055

That will work fine for the measuring process. .055" will be OK. Measurement allows machining each housing to the same clearance which provides for more equal braking force with the same pedal pressure. Jim
