Electrifying question!

Sooooo..., there has been a rather large black bear spotted in our western Pennsylvania neighborhood. My lovely wife looked up that which they like to eat. Basically, it's everything we grow on our little two acres. I do have a three strand electric fence around the 6000 square foot garden. Will that fence deter the average black bear? The tomatoes are just getting ready and the fall beans are coming along just fine.

From my experence with them it will p### him off real good and you will know that he is there with the god auful noise he makes. I don't know if it will stop or not.

A fence works fine to keep deer out of mine and I have used an electric fence to keep bears out of Honey Bees we placed in the mountains. It was a cheep battery unit and the bears never got through to the bees once the fence was in place. I know we had bears in the neighborhood because they destroyed a number of hives prior to the fence.

Get as powerful fence as you can - get one rated for as many miles as you can. Deer will use the low voltage/mileage wires to scratch their back.

The higher voltage units (7,000 - 9,000 volts) work better. The higher voltage will get their attention but not hurt them - it is a lot like touching a spark plug while the engine is running. It does not kill you but teaches your grandchildren a few new words!
