Farmall 460 D236 serial number

I see on any parts or overhaul kits for the D236 engine all start at serial #5116. Why is this? I have a D236 with a serial number 2040 stamped on the right side of engine block above fuel pump.

I just looked at a part supplier and they did not say why they start at that serial number but I am sure it is when IH went to the larger piston pin. Apparently they feel it is not profitable to supply parts for the older original engines with small pins. So, that would mean you would have to find different connecting rods to use the later pistons. You could verify the serial number when they changed by looking in the online parts catalog for your engine.

The 460 parts book lists that serial number as the break between the small pins (same as gasoline engines) and the later larger pins.

There is always the possibility that this tractor has been updated sometime in the last 55 years and has the larger wrist pins already.

If you're going to overhaul the engine come heck or high water, then take them out and see. You've got nothing to lose.

If the decision to rebuild the engine or sell the tractor hinges on the added cost of new connecting rods, get out the FOR SALE sign.
