So close with my H

So I got a new 6V battery, new coil, new plugs and plug wires, changed out the points, condenser and distributor cap on my H. Now she turns over pretty well, until I run the battery down trying to start her of course.

I got the tractor to start and she was actually running pretty strong, sounded like it at least. Except it would only run at 1/4-1/2 throttle, if I touched the throttle otherwise or if I put the tractor in gear and tried to move it, the tractor would die. I have to believe that it is a carb issue, but Im not positive.

Also, when it was running there were sparks, only a few, flying off the motor, coming from somewhere in the neighborhood of the manifold. I know that I need a new valve cover gasket, could that be my issue??

One other thing, the air breather bottom has a line in it that says oil level. Should I be filling the breather bottom up to this line with oil? If so, is just 10w30 good or is there some other oil I should be filling it with.

Thanks. All advice, suggestions, and help much appreciated.

IM SO CLOSE!!! Its killin me.

About the sparks. I think they would be more accurately described as hot embers flying around. Theyd land on me and burn me a little bit.

Clean the sediment and sludge out of the air cleaner cup and refill to that line with used motor oil from your engine . Don't waste new clean oil in the cup. None of that oil goes in the engine , it just attaches to the dust particles and settles them into the cup....

Did you check to make sure the manifold is not burned out anywhere. They usally burn out on the back side or bottom and it is not always noticeable. Jim

I did not check very thoroughly. If the manifold is burned out, could that be the reason it wont run correctly?

Yes depending on the type of manifold and where it is burned out it be causing it to run to lean or causing it to suck exhaust back in.

Sparks should not come from the under the valve cover, I would suspect a bad manifold. This could also create an intake leak which would make it run poorly.

Did you have the carb off? Do you know how to connect the governor tube to the carb and get the "tab in the slot"?

I did have the carb off. I inspected it, cleaned it, put it back together and reinstalled it. I know nothing about getting the tab in the slot though. Can you elaborate please?

I think its a bad manifold as well. I am going to remove the manifold today (hopefully) and inspect it. I'll order a new one if I need to. I might as well replace the valve cover gasket while Im at it as well. I have to order that part as well.

On the front of the carburetor is a tube that runs to the governor. When you disconnect the carb from that tube, it exposes a tab on the shaft in the tube, and a slot on the front of the carburetor.

If you don't get those aligned when you reinstall the carburetor, your throttle does funny things.

Did you clean the mouse/bird nests out from around the manifold before you tried to start it? Those hot embers could be burning nest.

Thanks. I will double check the tube/slot issue, but I think I have it
back together properly. I did look around for nests and didnt see
any, but again, I could have been and will be a little more thorough
with my manifold inspection.

Pulled the manifold off this afternoon. Burned through in two, maybe three spots. Im ordered up a new one and am going to do the valve cover gasket and head gasket while Im at it.

One thing about putting oil in the breather cup I learned the hard way--- if you happen to put too lightweight an oil in there like 5 or 10 weight, under a long hard pull like blowing silage, it can suck some into the carb and make her smoke--- a lot.
