sorry to post this I just can't figure it out. I have read lots of old post that I found which is quite a few. Still can't figure it out.

My 706D with the 282 only clicks when I hit the start button. If I keep hitting it it will most times engage the starter eventually. If I jump the solenoid it will start right off (maybe this is just lucky). I think the starter is OK, so that leaves me with solenoid or batteries and alternator. It Use to start right up even in the winter. Took the neg cable off while it was running and it continued to run.

Thanks for any help.

Do not disconnect the cable when running. The battery is a voltage control element in the system. With no battery, it can put radical voltage in the system. If alternator, it can be 100 volts or more.
The solenoid is bad, the starter is good.

It sounds like your solenoid.Remove it from the starter and take the cap off it(the black piece)you will see that the large contact washer will have a burned spot in it as will the end of the one lug that makes contact with the washer.turn the washer over clean up real good and turn the lug to a new contact spot and reassemble.I have done this many times. Also put a volt meter on the starter lug when you hit the button to make sure you have full voltage if not your cables are junk.

Take the plastic end cap off the solenoid. Flip the battery post stud, file up the other stud and the big washer.

sorry that's just what I've read to test to see if alt is bad or not. Will take advice don't need anything bad happening. LOL
Thanks for the diagnosis will order a new solenoid for it.

thanks will do be nice not to have to buy a new one. Been searching all over for the correct fan belt and alt belt, very confusing. Do they use the same size belt? On mine it came with the same size belts on it, they are 25-9495 but they are to the most adjusted limits so i want new ones I find the numbers on ebay but for the alt belt it says fan belt but the number is the alt belt number. see very confusing. least to me it is.

this is the alt belt number i get from case 385674R1
this is fan belt 385738R1

As has been said NEVER remove a battery cable with the engine running that can lead to many bad things. #1 you dead. #2 you burned. #3 the alternator letting the smoke out. Takes less then an amp to kill a man and an alternator puts out 35 plus amps. If you can jumper around the solenoid and it starts the solenoid is on it way out. A weak battery or bad alternator etc would not work if all you did was jumper around the solenoid

Nobody has mentioned the starter button. They can
get burnt/wornout after several years and several
million starts.My 1256 did that.Next time you have a
problem, wiggle the switch under your thumb.See if
that helps.

Solenoid problems like this is why I often add a starter relay. This gets a good voltage to the solenoid and solves the problem of voltage drop through ign switch, starter switch, safety switch and multiple wire connections.

Guys used to do that back in the old chevy solenoid problem days also.

If the battery cable stud has not been turned in the solenoid cap, it is possible to do that without removing the solenoid cap. Remove the battery cable from the stud and loosen the retaining nut about 1/4 inch. Push the stud into the cap and rotate 1/2 turn. Pull it back out and reassemble.

(quoted from post at 15:17:45 08/03/14) sorry that's just what I've read to test to see if alt is bad or not.

Everything you read on the Internet is true, right?

You gotta be careful. There is a lot of BAD advice out there, from people who are either clueless or are intentionally trying to get you to damage your tractor.

This one probably came from someone who has done it and gotten away with it. You will get away with it too, most of the time... It's that one time you DON'T get away with it that will ruin your day.

But, you've got a bad battery connection somewhere is all. Clean everything up as has been advised previously, and you will be fine.

Thanks for all the ideas. Took the solenoid apart and did all the things mentioned. No go does the exact same thing it did before. I put a meter on the solenoid before hitting the start button and it was 10.4 then hit the button and it dropped to 9.3 and kept dropping. What should I try next?

Your voltage is to low.You want minumum 12 volts as it a 12 volt system.Load test your batteries and if they are ok go at your cables.I use 3 ott with soulder on ends do not use those cheap clamp on cable ends from TSC.You MUST use heavy cable and good ends not light duty junk for cars and pick ups.Hope that helps you.

I load tested them and one went to the red side and said bad and the other side said ok in the green. not if i was suppose to charge them up first or not but I didn't.
