have a 53 upper m. use only for tractor rides. been using it for 10 years. about 700 miles a year. fifth gear seems to whine a lot on these fine Iowa roads. what is wearing out? rear end or tranmisson? thanks for any help. I read this forum all the time.

It could be a combination,of pinion on the transmission output shaft and the ring gear in the differential. It could also be the drive pinions and bull gears. They all whine to some extent. Were it mine I would probably replace the gear oil with 80-120 multi wt oil to assist in quieting it some. Grinding and jumping out of gear is bad. whining is moderately normel. Jim

Dont worry. My 'old' SuperM has been howling/grouling for the thirty five years or so that I've owned it.And it's an everyday worker, too.I think its a combination of bearings, straight cut gears,'oil',.......BTW,you wanna hear LOUD? just listen to the F-20(or my F-12s)

As the others mention they all whine somewhat in road gear. That's just the nature of straight cut gears running at that speed.

What's likely making the whine is the differential ring/pinion mesh. (The final drive bull gears/pinions make a deeper rumble or growl at speed)

The noise WON'T be coming from the transmission - power is "straight through" in 5th (no tranny gears involved).

Using heavier gear lube (80W-90, or even 140) will quiet it some. Especially so if the old lube is the wrong grade or contains a lot of water.

AMEN!! My 14 whines so bad it vibrates my feet, and it can down right clumsy to walk if I ride for more than 30 minutes. It was quieter before I went through the transmission, and sometimes I wish I would have left it alone, but the bearings were just too far gone.

On the other hand, my I-4 is so quiet, even in 5th, theres literally no sound from the trans at all.
