Will a international 400 make a decent loader tractor and which loader would be the best fit , form and function.

I think most utility tractors have had loaders in their lifetime. It should be good with power steering and live pto. There are a lot of short line loaders that will fit take your pick. Assuming you mean the utility version.

There is no utility version of the 400.

The Farmall version makes a just-okay loader tractor, BUT you absolutely need GOOD power steering. Power steering is optional on those tractors, and sometimes it doesn't work well.

You would be best off finding a tractor with the loader already mounted. It can be tough to find a good loader to fit a specific tractor, at the right price, within driving distance, in a reasonable timeframe. If you're willing to pay any price, yeah. If you're willing to fix up a piece of junk, yeah. If you're willing to drive thousands of miles, yeah. If you're willing to spend years looking, yeah.

There are dozens of different loaders that will fit, BUT they have to come off of another similar tractor in order to fit without modifications. Those tractors are the M, Super M, Super MTA, 400, and 450 Farmalls.

Rather than look for a specific brand/model, look for criteria. Ideally you want a loader with down pressure, a hydraulic dumping bucket, made from boxed steel NOT pipe, and came off one of the tractors I mentioned earlier.

The IH 2000 would be the most "correct" loader to fit that criteria, but they were made to fit dozens of different tractors. If you don't get the right brackets, you will need to make your own because just brackets are even harder to find than complete loaders.
