Old license plates

I know this is off base but I went to the restoration site with no luck. I have several license plates from the teens and twenties that have been hanging in a barn for many years and are rusty. I would like to clean the rust off of them and possibly clear them. Anyone have ideas how to do this without harming them? Thanks, Mark.

What do you want your "end result to be".
If you want them stripped clean of rust I would soda blast them. If you want the nostalgic look I would leave the rust on them and hit them with Fluid Film or wd40 a few times a year. That would keep the rust at bay and keep them looking "old"

Had an old JD planter cover that my dad wiped off good and sprayed it with lacquer or urethane spray... it gave it a nice deep chocolate rust color with a gloss finish that could be cleaned when needed.

I think it's in our tractor shed now... will try to snap a photo and post it.
