M-450 wide front end questions? What years were these made?

Well,I always thought the I.H. wide fronts with the tie rods in the REAR were available for the Super Ms from I.H. but I saw a post on here that says they were built for LATER year I.H. tractors. (400s-450s) I have a cheap I.T. service manual that shows BOTH of these front ends in it.

Photo#1 is my tractor with the tie rods to the rear.Photo#2 is an M with them to the front. What were the years were both of these front ends made from I.H.and what years of tractors would they have came on?

Available in early 54. They were considered a attachment and were sold for M to SMTA and then 400 and 450. Back then the attachment included a drilling diagram for the frame rails if installing on a M, SM or a SMTA below a certain serial number if I remember correct. Think I may have the serial number of the first SMTA built with the mounting holes in the frame rails. Would need to look or maybe its in a old post.
 
the M parts book shows both front axles .the early has a plate to adjust wheel base . later is none adjustable wheel base . it has auto type tie rod ends. tie rods on back
 
When IH started building the M tractor here in the UK from 13th September 1949 they fitted the tie rod behind the front axle. This was the only diffrence between the UK built and the USA built tractors. MJ
 
Looks like they were available at the start of Feb. 54. Was a new attachment for SMTA tractors.
Later in the month a bulletin was sent out that the attachment was released for M & SM & MD & SMD. Two to four holes needed drilled when used on a M, MD or SM, SMD tractors for the rear support saddle. No wide front like you ask about in attachment section of M or SM parts books printed before 1954.
Knowing IH they probably were some of the wide fronts being tried out before the official availability.
Interesting enough in later 1954 IH came out with the old type adjustable wheelbase wide front
attachment for the SMTA tractors for use with beet harvesters.

So,chances are that probably NO Super M TAs came with the OLDER wide front with tie rods in front then???


And yea,on mine I had to "jig up" the support saddle on my frame rails and drill the holes for it. (1953 Stage 2)

Wonder why you guys got THAT style of wide front in 1949 with the tie rods in the rear,and we started out with the tie rod ends in FRONT???
 
So,was the older wide front with the tie rods in the front I sent in picture #2 ALWAYS available since 1939 them????
 
Mike,I always thought that the 'new style' came out with the '54 SMTA.But I think in acctuality,the last SM and the first SMTA could have either type.IH tended to do that type of thing during 'transition'.It was used till the early 560.The 'old style' acctually got it's start with the late F-20.
 
Very good chance both type wide fronts got used on SM and SMTA. If a dealer sold a tractor and the farmer wanted a wide front unless the purchaser specified the type they probably put whatever was there if any on the tractor. Also some SM tractors weren't sold until middle to latter 54 and at least some say they bought one left over in 55. later wide front attachments were out and dealer installed on some.
SMV tractors got the new wide front in later 53 although different height than a SMTA one.
SH tractors came with the frame rails drilled the first one made in Feb. 54 for the new type SH wide front.
 
Reading this discussion, one of my SM Lp's of later production, S/N 49xxx something, has the later WFE. Wonder if it was early try with the new front or if someone put it on there?
 
The old style was available on the 38/39 F20,maybe even earlier than that.Those had the cast center tube with the round spoke FH wheels. Later (dont know just when),IH changed to the steel center tube.The round spoke wheel was F20 only.M used the common cast M style hub.
 
Hmm, I could look on the hubs at the casting dates and compare with the rest of the machine. May or may not mean anything. It's down for a clutch job anyway.
