460 smokes a lot

Got the 460 LP running last weekend, runs really well, except that it smokes and even blows out small amounts of oil out of the exhaust! I checked compression on all cylinders, it ranges from about 90 to 130 psi. Could anyone tell me what they typically get in psi on 460's or 560's when they check for compression pressure? I sure do hate to go into the short-block, may start with checking for missing or broken valve stem seals. Anything in particular to look out for on a preliminary inspection of the heads and cylinders? Thanks, Hugh

the actual number for compression is not that important as thee difference between the cyl and yours sounds not too bad you might have to " go into the short block " as it sounds like the oil rings are stuck they don't hurt or help compression numbers but they keep the oil out of the exhaust which yours is not. I hope this helps.

Ron in Can: Yes it does help. That was exactly what I was thinking, stuck oil rings. There used to be a product that you put into the crankcase and also down the carburetor, called "Casite Tune Up" that was really good for this condition. Haven't seen it around in years. Anybody had good luck with Marvel Mystery Oil? I've seen it but never used it. Hugh

Check that the crankcase can breathe. Around here dirt daubers like to get in the breather tubes if they're not already plugged up from years of crud. Slight pressure on the lower end will keep the oil rings from doing their job.

UPDATE: A few hours ago, I unbolted the breather tube from the cover on the side of the block, and looked into it: solid, dried clay, from dirt daubers. Took me several minutes to get it all out. I put it back on and started the engine--totally different engine. I ran it for thirty minutes, not a drop of oil out of the exhaust, a little smoke after about ten minutes, not much, plus it idled rock steady. Before it was up and down, up and down. Thanks, Centex. Hugh

I am glad you got the bugs out that is way cheaper then taking it apart and now it sounds like it works better never thought about that in the intake will from here on.
