I drove a super A home approximately 5 miles at 3/4
throttle yesterday and when I got home I noticed
fluid leaking out of the left rear axle area and it
was steaming hot. Do i have an axle problem or
could the left brake been slightly on causing it to
heat up?

The brake was probably slightly on. One way to check is to jack up that wheel, be sure to block the other wheels for safety, and put the trans in neutral. See if you can rotate it easily. Check to make sure that the brake on that wheel is released. Check it again. If it still drags, you could have a bearing problem on your axle. But I'll bet it was a brake that wasn't fully released. It happens all the time. Doesn't usually amount to much, other than shortened life of brake shoes. Email is open if you need to write. Hugh

The brake drum is nowhere near the fluid on a Super A. It's up on the axle at the top of the final drive, while the fluid is down below in the pan at the bottom of the final drive.

You would have noticed a burning brake smell long before the heat transferred all the way down.

I would recommend that you drop the oil pan off the final drive and see what you have going on in there. It's not a major job, and at least you'll know instead of guessing.

Was the oil coming from the axle or the diff shaft out of the tranny. Probably was coming from the inner seal on the diff shaft and the brake band could be set too tight and making contac with the brake drum which is located rite next to the tranny on the diff shaft.

could be both

water tends to accumulate in the trannies and pans. crack open the drain plug on the tranny and see if water comes out.

The brake is next to the tranny on the diff shaft not on the axle and if the seal is leaking out of the tranny it sure will get into the brake drum and fluid will leak out the weep hole in the final. Axle in final wouldnt get hot driving down the road unless the bearing would be shot then it would make a terible noise as the gears would not in line up.
