Hy- Tran equivilent

I'm changing out the gear oil in my 706 and was wondering what other oils would work the same as the hy-tran. I'm thinking something from TSC or Rural King. The most work this tractor does is run a snow blower in the winter. Is Hy-Tran a multi weight oil or single. Thanks Larry

Darned near every farm sore or implement dealership sells "UTF" (Universal Tractor Transmission and Hydraulic Oil".)

Look at the label on the oil jug, and verify that it meets IH "specs". (Likely, it will meet other RED and GREEN and BLUE "specs", as well.)

There's tens of thousands of working tractors that survive on the generic stuff, and quite a few "haters" on the 'net that say you need to shell out the BIG bucks at the dealership for the OEM stuff.

It's up to you!

HyTran is a single wt oil.As was said, there a multitude of 'Hydralic/transmission' oils out there. As long as it meets specs,it's ok.NAPA;Phillips HG fluid;Mobil 303;Wal-mart; JD HyGard..............

You have entered into a dangerous zone by mentioning switching from HyTran on this site. Although I agree that a universal hydraulic oil would work just as well, beware of the correct police they will soon be here.

I hate the term "Universal" because that *USED* to mean the stuff that was *NOT* Hytran-compatible.

You want a hydraulic fluid that is "MS-1209 Compliant" as that is the specification that defines what Hytran is.

You will get any number of responses here, going from claims that it works fine to claims that it caused problems/damage.

Frankly, if it's wet and slippery I can't see how the tractor could possibly tell the difference. It's an inanimate object, and has no senses or feelings. The biggest issue is additive compatibility. Put two wrong additives together and you could end up with a goopy melange that won't go through the pumps or filters.

Back in the 70's I bought a 5-gal. bucket from the IH dealer. It was left outside one day and got rained on. The IH Hy-Tran label started to peel and underneath was a Shell Lomax label. So I lost my OCD Hy-Tran compulsion. These days I use Wal-Mart UTF.

There was also an IH depot to dealer shipping label on it so it was no scam of the dealer's.
