2 guys, cold beers, and shop talk

A buddy of mine and I were sitting around talking shop and drinking beer. After trying to solve all of the world's problems, we came across two things we couldn't figure out. You have to keep in mind that the two of us can turn a wrench but claim to be no experts at what were are doing AND the beer was going down easily!!

1) Not that one would but, could a person take an IH 291 gas engine and put it into an 886 or 986?

2) Can you put an 86 series cab on a 66 series tractor without much effort?

Remember, these are things one wouldn't necessarily do and the beer was cold!! But can these things be done without much issue?

Thanks for taking a look at/chiming in on our discussion. Too bad I could hand you a beer too!!

Kirk, don"t know about the first question but the second anything is possible but not worth the effort.First the 86 series cab sit forward so you would have to use the rear mount tank or put a filler neck in the cab with you second the rear cab mounts holes are not even casted on early 66"s and aren"t drilled or tapped on late black stripes. There are a lot more differences but those are the biggest and most obvious.Don"t forget the 86"s have no steering tower with all your controls. All in all could it be done?Sure but worth the effort no.

The answer to the first question is why would you want to remove a 436 diesel from a 986 and install a smaller gas engine.

I replaced a cab on a 1086 once upon a time as a shed roof had fallen on it. Very little damage but owner demanded new cab from Insurance Co. They turned around and sold that cab to another one of our customers and he had someone install it on a 66 series tractor. He liked the end product but I never had a chance to see it.

Friend of mine installed a 86 series cab on a 1456. Looks and works fine. Yes you could install a gasser in a 886 or 986 if you really felt the need.

Thanks guys for sharing your thoughts. Once again, as the cans were piling up, the crazy ideas happened and the "what ifs" were flowing as freely as the beer!! Sometimes its interesting to think about mixing and matching. Thanks again!!

This was just talked about over on ag talk. Someone posted a picture of there uncles 1066 with cab and platform off of a 2+2. I tried to bring the picture over but couldn't get it done. I don't see why it couldn't be done, especially on a late model 66 series. I also have seen pictures of the 86 cab put on older IH"s, it can be done, time and money are the only ingredients.

Last year in Red power Magazine,a man put an '86 cab on BOTH a gas 560 and an 806 diesel.I still have the article.And....WHY would would you 'repower' with a smaller gasoline engine?????
