Baling without a live PTO

Just wondering how many guys are still using tractors without a live PTO to bale. I do about 1300 bales per year using my 43 M. Baling without a live PTO isn't too big of a deal a long as the windrows are sized right for the baler.

I used to bale with tractor without live PTO. The best one was with my old 1938 JD G. Sometimes I would have to kick it out of gear when I hit a big slug, but it ran the baler better than my smaller tractors. Have a SMTA now that works much better

Charlie I know this "can't be done", but I'm baling hay with a very tired '51 Super A and a #46 baler. Just did a portion of a field where the grass was 4-6' tall when cut. The pick-up was often stuffed and it was spitting out a bale about every 50'. Yes, it makes the old girl work, but once it gets everything rolling, it seems to do really well.

Used to do it with a farmall H and I found a M&W hand clutch and installed it on the tractor. Now I can pull back the hand clutch to stop the tractor and the pto keeps going. Money well spent!!

Here in the UK there was no livedrive tractors until 1956. David Brown tractors had hydraulic lifts available from there introduction in 1939 so they offerd their version. It was a small wheel on a arm fitted just inside the RH rear wheel. This arm was controlled by a hydraulic ram and when you lifted the control lever up the ram pushed this small wheel down until the RH tractor wheel cleared the ground and stopped the tractor. Then when you lowerd the lift lever the small wheel came up and the tractor set off again. The tractor PTO shaft kept driving all the while you did this operation. MJ

Some outfit, don't remember who, used to market one like that in the US too - maybe Beheln?

Legend has it that my grandfather would sit on the seat of the H or M with his left foot up on the gearshift knob, and he would "kick" the tractor out of 1st when the baler got overwhelmed.

We baled with a Farmall BN and a NH 66 baler for years. No motor on then baler, all pto drive. Carried plenty of shear pins.

Dad baled for many years with SC and IH #45 baler until 1958 util he traded SC for 300U with IPTO.
Neighbour baled for years with Ford 8N and IH #46 baler util he bought a Ford 2000 in mid 1960s.

We baled with a 49 John Deere A and 51 Farmall M. Several we times baled with Farmall B but just dropped bales on ground. None of them had live pto and we pulled a John Deere 14 T. I liked useing the M it run smoother and had more power than JD A.

+1 and you are right about having the windrows sized properly. A nice selection of slower gears helps too. Regardless the windrows must be sized and raked accordingly to what you have to use (an idiot on the rake will make for a long day).

None of my tractors have live PTO but I still square bale.

I've made round hay with a tired '50 M. Hydraulics reconfigured with a valve to open and shut the rear gate. Takes a little finesse and worked the M good with a full bale in the chamber. Biggest complaint was the narrow front.
Now using the 400D.

My dad put an M&W hand clutch on our M, back in the mid 60's when you could still get that stuff. Baled thousands of bales with it and a John Deere wire baler. I still have the M.

We baled with a pair of old balers...55 Ih and 57 Ih with engines that they converted to propane. I think we had 2 55s and used the engine on one to make the other work. Dad cut the flywheel so he could play with the material about 2 months ago. He still is creative.

(quoted from post at 11:25:27 06/25/14) What model round baler did you use behind the M?

That's kind of what I wondered... every round baler (with the exception of the old AC) that I've seen would take [u:f892142d3d]at least[/u:f892142d3d] a 75 hp tractor and a higher pressure hydraulic system. Guy that baled Dad's had (IIRC) a 966 on his baler and it made it snort.
