broken rod and piston

I have started taking apart the engine on a 1957 TD-6 that I have had sitting around. Engine ran well when it came here but then there was a bang of sorts and it stopped and was stuck solid. I have dropped the oil pan and there is pieces of the front most piston in the pan and the rod is jammed against the block where it meets the oil pan. There are no metal shavings or other debris in the pan, very clean. It is a very nice machine and I would like to get it back into use...price within reason, but I am willing to put a few bucks into it. Can you give me an idea of what to look for that might have caused this to happen? I am not a tear down the engine mechanic. More of a "I can get it running if it turns" kind of mechanic. But I would like to learn and this is a chance to do that. I am thinking of pulling the head to check for damage and see if anything is in the cylinder up above. Any suggestions on where to go next or opinions gratefully accepted.

Cause? you will have to do more digging. Pull the head so you can see from both ends. Did a valve fail and drop into cylinder? oldiron29

I'll have to wait and see what I can find on that. I am hoping the PO did not damage the head and maybe something fell off into the cylinder. I'll look deeper when we get some dry weather and the work slows down.

Dave, Could be that a keeper that holds a valve came lose and the valve dropped on the piston. When I was in Illinois, I had a friend with an MD that this happened to. He was lucky and stopped the tractor when the noise occured. He had no head or piston damage, but just one bent valve. Just a suggeston of what could have happened. Actually, when this happend, the tractor was being driven by Max Armstrong, the TV Ag broadcaster who is on every Saturday morning on the Agri-Business program. Al

I'll keep that in mind. If you send me an email I will put you in my archives. It takes me FOREVER to get this sort of thing done because 1) I have no experience and I like to take my time and 2) I am really freakin busy between my regular business and the never ending farm chores this time of year. But when I need the parts I will give a yell. Email in my profile on modern view.

Funny story. I bet Max was thrilled he broke the tractor! I hope the head is OK on this thing. Probably a deal breaker if I have to replace it.

I wasn't there when it happened but my friend said he really felt bad about it until he found out it wasn't that serious. It was something that could have happened anytime. Max lived close to my home in Ill. We had a County owned farm that a number volunteer antique tractor guys farmed as a 50s farm mainly planting corn & beans. Max would come to the farm from time to time. I haven't talked to Max now for about 12 years since I retired and returned to Wis. Al
