Hi all, just picked up a 42 H for the excellent price of FREE!! Its my first antique tractor and I dont know too much about them, but love em. Its in great shape, but doesnt run right now. I threw new plugs and a brandy new battery at it and tested the starter. She turns over, but very very slowly, not quick enough to fire if you ask me. Its a 6 volt system. I couldnt get the drain plug out to change the oil so I dropped the pan altogether. Im waiting for a fresh gasket and wont be able to check for spark until I get the new gasket, reinstall the pan, and fill her back up with fresh oil. Anyone have any idea why she cranks so slow and what else I should check or change to get this beauty running? Thanks for you help.

They will crank slow if you have small battery cables. 6 volt systems need 00 gauge cables. Easiest source is welding lead cables. Clean and solder all battery cable ends. Then mount the ground, which should be the positive side of the battery, directly to one of the bolts that mounts the starter to the frame. Thatll get you somewhere close to turning over faster(given your starter is in good shape.)

I would go and have the starter refreshed as it hasnt ran for some time and would need new brushes and the commutator cleaned and with new brushes should work fine i use 1ga cables they work fine. They do make cable made for starters as welding cable isnt the best but it will work. Also get the gen refreshed while you have the starter worked on that way you have a good starter and generator.

NAPA can make cables of what ever gauge and length you want. They did mine for my A (6volts) and it cranks great.

Yes, very important to comnnect the battery cable directly TO the starter mounting bolt, touching the starter bolt lug. Made all the difference on my "H".
