friend of mine has a 350 farmall, with continental diesel engine. diesel mechanic told him that the rings have collapsed, because it has sat too long, since it has ran. ever heard of this?
 
What is the problem with the tractor that you were consulting the "diesel mechanic"? Does the tractor run? To much oil consumption, blowby? Need more info. I don't think rings lose there spring like properties just due to setting. However if it sat a while and the cylinder walls rusted. Now if you have it running again the rings could have been stressed during start up while burnishing the rust from the cylinders.
 
yes, sorry that i did not give you all that i know about the tractor. mechanic cannot get the motor to run. continental diesel.
 
How long since it last ran? Depending on fuel condition when parked the injection pump may have the valves and plungers stuck from old stale fuel. Have an IH 806 pump apart now with rust inside, sat for a year since last used and some water in the fuel.
 
a gas engine will start much quicker, if it is pulled, rather than trying to crank with starter. will a diesel do the same?
 
I had a 350 diesel it never really cranked fast enough to start easy if possible roll it down a hill or a short tug would make it spin just enough faster to get it to start
I had put new rings in mine and ground crank new bearings when I got it back together it would smoke but not fire up so finally we hooked behind my H and within about 10 feet it started right up
I had new wires high cranking battery and rebuilt starter still when engine not warmed it needed a very small wif of starting fluid once it had run it started well
Now I haw a 460 diesel and 560 diesel and had starters rebuilt and they seem to wip over much faster on my 460 utility diesel it even makes the front tires bonce a bit when cranking starts real easy
