I need someone to think outside the box. I have an M that has about as much work done on it as is possible. Engine, axle bearings, tires, etc. Last week it raked hay for three days, no problems. Today it ran for about a half hour and quit. It does this occasionally. The tank is CLEAN. The filter to the carburetor is CLEAN. Good stream of gas. It always starts back up in a few minutes. I have posted messages about this tractor before. Oh, all new wiring harness also. Help me out here, somebody come up with a new idea. Thanks, Ellis

Do ya have spark after it quits???

Good fuel flow the carb after it quits??

Ya mention a filter, it it an inline device and if so is it for gravity fuel service??

..I'm thinking that fuel filter could be a problem. Ellis, when you check fuel flow, pull the plug on the carb and let it run into a can...for a long time. I have had people tell me they have fuel and when I check they have fuel in the carb and none coming in to replace it,too slow a flow or a blockage that lets enough into the carb to start it after it has sat for several minutes

The tank can be clean but have something floating around in it that occasionally plugs the outlet. Use a flashlight and see if anything is in the opening or take a piece of wire and push out anything in it. No tractor with a several decade old tank is completely clean, that includes those that have been "cleaned" and sealed. The starting after a few minutes points to the coil. However I doubt if it would run 3 days with a bad coil or condenser. I vote for something in the tank.

Id guess the in line fuel filter also. Try a napa 3031 or 3032 depending on your fuel line size. Also check the gas cap and see if is venting. Could be a plugged vent hole in the cap.

My C stopped. I thought it was out of gas, but it had a few inches in the tank. It started back up and ran, but not always for very long. The filter in the carb. had a Vaseline type of coating on it. I am now working on the governor and so I have not run it since cleaning the filter, but I expect it to run much better very soon

Seems like somebody once said when a coil goes bad it runs good cold, but when it heats up it quits, then when it cools down it runs good again for a while. Don"t know, maybe that"s true, maybe not.

I would look for 2 things. The coil has been mentioned and I agree that is a good place to start. A faulty coil can be VERY intermittent in failing......they don't always "drop dead". Second area is to make sure there isn't a short in the wiring to the coil (or a loose connection). Loose connection is possible, as I have had 1 instance where a new wiring harness had a connector on it that someone had forgotten to strip the wire. I spent 2 weeks chasing a problem, until I got out the volt meter and checked everything for continuity.

Keep us posted.

By filter, you mean the screen inside the fitting where the metal fuel line screws into the carb, right?

I'd agree with the post below to pull the drain plug on the bottom of the carb and make sure fuel runs out of there for several minutes.

I would check the gas cap first, make sure the vent is open, or just replace it. If it's fine, then I would check the coil. If it's too hot to touch when it dies, then the coil is bad, if it's just warm, then we are back to square one.
