Not sure how to explain this right but here it goes. Replaced
the temperature gauge an where it threads into the head there
was a piece of t pipe with a plug on the t. So I removed that
piece thinking it was something someone just added. Now the
new gauge I bought will thread in but won't seal properly.
Wondering if this pipe that was there needs to be there or did I
just get a faulty gauge. Problem is I misplaced the piece of
pipe that I took off. This question might no make any sense but
any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There is a special adapter that screws into the head, and then the gauge screws into that adapter. The "tee" fitting that you removed was probably installed by a previous owner to allow for an electric "tank type" engine heater. If you can find the tee fitting, you might want to put it back on.

Incidently, that special adapter that screws into the head is still available from Case-IH.

I have that piece that fits in the head first. Almost like a
reducer. I thread gauge in and still the piece in the centre that
attachs to the wire is loose for some odd reason. Gauge is
from Steiner so mayb the made in china part is faulty....

The part that threads into the head LOOKS like a pipe reducer, but (as you have figured out) has a different internal thread... straight instead of tapered, and there's a "ledge" partway through that the the flange on the gauge bulb gets clamped against. Sounds like the folks from "The Land of Almost Right" didn't quite get all those details right!

It has been my experience that new temp gauges come with several different adapters for the temp sensor, including the correct one for use in a 300 Farmall.

I am wondering if you just need some thread sealant on that piece. Liquid Teflon is better than the tape.
