Backwards spin

Sounds like base timing is a wee bit early and it "kicked".

Lucky it didn't take your arm with it!

Bob is correct. If a mag, it needs to be at aatdc when it trips the impulse, or if Distributor, it needs to be at TDC when the points break. Hand cranking a tracdtor with the spark even a little before TDC will break your arm. Jim

(quoted from post at 19:28:52 06/08/14) Thanks for the replies. I guess I am lucky, however, I have always cranked it with a 3/4" long handle ratchet and a bolt that fits the crank. Ellis
hat is even more dangerous. A conventional crank allows you to stand and grip in a way that reduces chance of injury with a kickback. It seems impossible to grip a ratchet handle in a way that will keep you out of harm's way.
