I have a 1952 M, and would like to upgrade from a 2x14 trailer plow to a 3x16 trailer plow. Would the tractor pull the 3x16 in decent ground?

No 3x16s are going to be too much for an M in decent ground. Here in central IA my M and MD have all they want with 3x14s and they are slat bottoms so pull even a little easier.

We pulled 3 14 in black gumbo with our M , back in Nebraska soooo in decent ground with the share sharp , I believe you would be alright with 6 inches more plow.

2 - 16" is all mine wants in this clay sod. In stubble it would pull 3 I think.

My grand dad had some tough ground and even with the M&W stuff in the engine 2 -14" was ya wanted in the sod.

2-16 was all our M wanted in yellow clay (the type often used for pottery) 3-14 in medium loam will be operational between 2nd and 3rd gear. 3-16 Maybe light sandy soil. Jim

We had a 3x14 Case dad bought new in 48. Pulled it with his CC then with the F-20(Dad said it had M&W kit in it) and then the M. Think we always used 2nd gear.

That would depend a lot on what has been done to your tractor since it was new.

With oversized high compression pistons and a little more ignition advance, a little more RPM from the governor, fresh spark plugs, and a good carburetor tuning, and you have around 55 reliable horsepower. That would let you pull three sixteens or four fourteens most places. In heavy clay, gumbo, or alfalfa sod you would want less plow.

M's were rated for 3-14" plows, H's for 2-14" plows. Of course your soil, how well your tractor is set up and ballasted and the shape of the plow will have a lot of effect on what you can pull.

They were rated 3x14 in average soil. But depending on soil that could be more or less.Remember, you are MUCH better of with a plow that is a bit too 'small',than with a plow that is too 'big'.

Like said by others it depend on what has been done to tractor. We bought a 51 M that someone had put the 264 block in it. We rebuilt it with a IH Fire Crater 281 over size pistons and Lp manafold , rebuilt carb and dist.with kits that came with over haul kit. We pulled 3x16's and it would pull a one row insilage chopper.

They were rated as a 2-3 plow tractor, meaning either 2x16 or 3x14. Only in light sandy soil would they handle a 3x16. Hit a tougher spot and you will be down shifting to low.
