Sluggish Super M

For the last several years my Super M didn't seem to have the power it should. I tried several things and nothing seemed to help. This past winter I had to split it and put some beaings in the front of the transmission. After it was back together it ran like it always used to. All sorts of power and purred like a kitten. The difference from before and after splitting the tractor was after I split it I didn't put the heat houser back on. Turns out the canvass was keeping the throttle lever from moving all the way so it wouldn't run full throttle. Sometimes I have a tendency to overlook the obvious.

Your story reminds me of a similar one. One harvest we broke
a final drive on the Massey combine just before lunch. It took
the rest of the day to fix. The next day we went back to the
field and with each pass it would handle less and less - ending
up with only half a cut possible. We rebuilt the carb twice.
Nope. We drove two hours to get a new governor (Chrysler
straight 6). Nope. We threw in the towel and called the
mechanic out. I sat in the cab and ran the throttle up and
down. He just smiled. The air cleaner line was sucked flat - the
oil bath cleaner was full of chaff. It must have happened that
first day and we didn't regrease since it hadn't run long before
the drive broke. All that for a dirty air filter. After that we tied a
gunny sack over the precleaner.

I took a "new" SM LP out to the field for some passes with a 3-12 moldboard. I had worked on this one over the course of a month to get it operational as it was in sorry condition when I got it.

It sounded good but just didn't have much grunt under load. An older neighbor farmer was observing too (and a green tractor fan at that). It could barely handle our black dirt even in first gear. I went back to the house and after shut down to look it over I figured out the choke lever was in the choke position! With no cable on it I had been moving the lever from the ground and had left it in the choke position.

No air = No power!
