Had no spark at plugs. Install a tune up kit including distributor cap. Had to remove distributor to install point and condensor. Now have spark at all spark plugs. Still want start but back fires once in a while. Marked the distributor and very carefully put it back. Help!

Plug wires from front to back are 1234
Firing order is 1342
Most have the # one position on the cap at 1:30 or 2 o'clock. Distributor rotation is CW looking from the rear. 4:30 position is #3, 7:30 position is #4, and 10:30 is #2. point gap is .020"

sounds like that the distributor shaft was turned , while you had the distributor out of the tractor.
loosen distributor and advance timing ( turn counter clockwise ) and try to start. if it is backfiring, the timing is to retarded.

You need to remove the sparkplug near the radiator
and bring that piston to TDC on the compression stroke.
You will need a helper crank the engine and you hold your thumb over the plug hole until you feel compression and the helper slowly keeps cranking until that piston is at TDC. You can drop a long plastic straw on top of the piston if possible and watch it rise. Then look at your rotor to see where its pointing. Should be at the No1 plug tower. If it's off remove the distributor or mag and rotate it so it's aligned
with the No1 plug tower and reinstall it. Hal
