I may be able to purchase a 234 international tractor from a relative whose husband has past away recently.the tractor has sat for at least 3years.it's in rough shape but I believe it did run when it was parked.the key switch has not worked for years and it was crossed out to start it each time.I put a battery in it and it turns over fine and smokes a little out the exhaust like it is getting fuel but not sure if it's getting fire or not.Without buying a key switch(until if I buy it)how can I check if it's getting fire?is there a wiring diagram that anyone knows about online? Thanks

As Bob and Kub said , you have a diesel. You will need to preheat w/ glow plugs. Sadly glow plug switch is part of ignition switch which you state is not working.

If a wiring diagram would help, you can get it at www. cngco.com. Click on parts and then on wiring diagram to find your 234.

Good Luck, Bill

Handy tractor but parts can be tough to get. Mitsibushi engine. I have aftermarket contacts if part is needed that is not available from Case/IH. Looked up ignition/glow plug switch #1271716C1 which looks to be available from Case/IH in $140 + price range.

I worked on a friends 254. You should be able to jump around
the ignition to get things working. It needs the glow plugs to
start. Also, when you turn the ignition on, it activated a fuel
solenoid on the right side of the engine by the pump to turn the
fuel on. You will see a plunger move. On the dash at the lower
right of the steering wheel is a small chrome disk with holes in
it. Inside is a coil of wire that glows red after a few minutes to
show the glow plugs are working. Also, there is a park position
on the range selector on the left side of the tractor. It needs to
be in park, and the clutch depressed for the starter to work.
Hope that helps.

ork and it had a couple places on the starter wire where it was crossed out to get the starter to work and the safety switch that was mentioned that had to be in neutral was undone and tractor did not have a battery in it.I kinda thought it was wired up so glow plugs would work as soon as a battery was hooked up and then cross the starter solenoid out so it would turn over and fire up.tractor only has 9?? Hours on it but it's been neglected as far as when odd and end things tore up it did not get fixed or repaired correctly.can I run a hot wire temporarily to fuel pump or somewhere where I can get it going?

I have a 234 also. Mine is in good shape overall. I can only start mine with the glow plugs first, even in the heat of summer. I can't mine to shut off with the switch. Been trying to determine where the solenoid is at and is it a solenoid problem or a switch problem.Tractor seems to have a lot of power for a small tractor. It is a tough tractor to get on and off of after you hit 60.
