Hi guys I'm looking at a farmall 1026 hydro for about 5000 bucks it runs and has 5000 hrs on it. My son loves the look of it and wants to restore it. Is it worth restoring? Any pros or cons to watch out for on this machine? Thanks for your time.

$5000is cheap!!!1026s are somewhat rare,only 2900
'copys' made. popular with collectors.I sold mine
for 7500.Should have kept it.Contrary to 'popular'
belief,Yes you can use the hydros for till age,all
day long.True they are not as effiecient as a gear
drive, and tend to use more fuel. You just have to
know how to run them. You just cant 'push' them
like a gear drive.I grew up around hydros. There
were several around the neighborhood,they
worked(plowed,disked...) all day long right beside
the gear drives.Hydros are outstanding for PTO
work(beats the heck out of a JD powershift). As far
as expecive to 'fix',try to repair a JohnDeere
powershift.I've owned 3 hydro
tractors(826,1026,H100).Still own the 826.Steve

Thanks for the info guys. Is there any way to know if the hydro part of the tractor is in good shape? I know diesels well but have never worked on a hydro. I'm assuming hydro stands for hydralic transmission?

Simple test: warm engine/trans.Place trans in HI
range.Hold with brakes.With engine at rated RPM,push
SR lever completely foreward.Engine should be
'killed' or MAJORLY overloaded.

Delta red is right about a Hydro being used for tillage,we had
a 1066 hydro for years & it was the main tillage tractor for a
while. Was just a bit harder on fuel,a few others in the area
were tillage tractors too.Hydro's will give you good service if
they are maintained correctly, heat & contamination are the
biggest enemy's.I spent 6 years at an IH dealership between
84-90,only saw one hydro unit apart & there were lots around
at that time.

I agree. There were and are a lot of them in this area. Quite
handy. I never saw anyone use them for tillage. I don't think I
ever recall seeing very many if any dualed up. They were
great planter, manure hauling, cultivating, mowing, snow
blowing, etc. tractors. Even knew of a couple of hydros with
mounted pickers back in the day. They were awesome for
that.
