H Oil Filter Conversion Kit

Nothing I seem to do can stop oil from spewing out of my oil filter, I"ve tried new gaskets and adjusting it many times.

Does anybody have any tricks to stop this or can anybody please direct me to a place in which I can purchase the adapter kit so it will accept screw on type oil filter.

I"ve tried calling my local IH implement and they said its been discontinued. Thanks

Could be there is some old gasket material still down in that groove. I would take some kind of a small pick and scratch around in there and see if maybe that isn't the problem. You can take the whole filter unit off with those four bolts if you want to get it where you can see it better to work on it. If you need another filter unit I have several on hand and would sell one for $5.

Like othere post said the groove where the gasket is not clean or a new gasket would stop the leak. Ive only been changing those filters for 65 pluss yrs. You need to realy look good to make sure that groove is clean. Use a brite lite sna look hard.

From personal experience, and as previously suggested, I'd bet it is the result of old gaskets that are stuck in that groove.

I took my oil filter mount off to give it a good cleaning and had to pick out what I would guess to be at least 2 compressed, hardened rubber gaskets. It was a pain in the butt for sure but with the groove clean and a new gasket in there, all is well.

my 2 cents.

Take the filter off and take the gasket out and if you don't have a groove that is deeper then what your gasket is you have old gasket left in the groove. take a small pick or screw driver and tap it in the groove and if you have gasket in there it will come out in pieces. Clean the groove out good and put a new gasket in and put the filter back on and when you are tighten the bolt hold the can so it doesn't turn and ruin the gasket. Also I have seen where the gasket leaked on the part that is bolted to the block.

When I first got the tractor years ago, I changed the oil and of course the old gasket had to get picked out and every oil change since, the gasket came out perfectly. I will take everybody's advice and check again with a light and closer inspection.

This is the part #538828R91 I used for my M, which should be the same for your H. The last one I bought was about three years ago and was $60.37. The filter part #538836R1 was $6.44 and was a Fleetguard. I am not sure if that was the part number you used or just called and asked them to look it up. Might be worth calling back and just asking for a price on that part number if you did the later.

Thats the exact part number I gave to the dealer. He says they've been discontinued and so does the main Case IH site. I should have shopped for one a few years ago.

Thanks for all the help folks. Turned out there was another complete gasket stuck down in there, meaning it had two when I bought it. It still sweats a little bit out but hopefully with a bit more torque on the bolt that will come to an end.

These guys are suggesting that you take a closer look at the groove because sometimes a previous owner can install a second gasket out of ignorance. Old hard gaskets can feel like steel when you are scraping around in there with your pick.

After you install the new gasket, there should still be a shallow groove that the housing cover sits in.

Where is it leaking? If it's leaking out the top, no amount of futzing with the gasket will help. You need a new copper washer.

If it's still leaking, it's likely the cover has been overtorqued and is now warped.

Its coming out of the main gasket area but on second thought it might have just been the excess oil in the gasket area getting squished out but the pressure from tightening the bolt.

LISTEN to "mkirsch".

That groove for the square-cut filter canister seal "O" ring is WAY deeper than you realize, and, once you dig all the debris out of it and clean it up 100% and install a nice new soft, flexible rubber ring, all will be well.

BT,DT, earned the "T" shirt several times over!

Post back with some photos of what was down in there, just for giggles!

There was another complete gasket down there, been that way since I bought it. You're right it is pretty deep once you get everything cleaned out.

HA HA, this Forum IS GREAT for sharing experiences!

The first time I dealt with that, about 40 years ago, there was no such world-wide help/circle of crusty codgers to share advice/experiences.

On those old hard gaskets, spray a little carb cleaner on it let it sit for a little bit and the rubber will come up a lot easier

A hacksaw blade can be ground/filed to be a very useful scraper/pick for o-rings, gaskets and such. Always have a couple of such on hand.

I bought a conversion adapter for a F340 from bumper to bumper a year ago , I think you may get aftermarket parts but it's easier than fighting that groove .

The part number 538828R91 is still good as far as I can tell. The price is now $135 tho! Google the number.
