Farmall 504 engine blown

Hello, I’m new to the forum and looking for some assistance. I learned last weekend that a piston rod going through the block of a Farmall 504 gasser makes a terrible sound, especially when I spent the winter before last restoring the tractor (except the engine which I should have) that I’ve had for 30 years and use for grading the long driveway and some light dirt work. So, of course I’m now wondering if anyone on the forum might have a lead on where I can get ahold of a new engine. I live in northern Wisconsin and not exactly in farm country. Being new to this issue any help/suggestions on where to start would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I would try to find a replacement IH engine that has sleeves. We had those tractors at work for mowing firing ranges and the engines didn't hold up. The government figured it cost too much to repair the engine and the tractors were sold at a spot bid auction. Hal

I don't know what you're going to find that has sleeves... The C153 was only used in the 504's and one model of combine if I'm not mistaken, and the C153 is the only engine that will fit in a 504 gasser without major modifications.

As far as finding a replacement, you're just going to have to start finding tractor salvage yards and calling around. Unfortunately the 504 isn't terribly common compared to a C or an H, for example. You might have to drive a few hundred miles to pick one up when you find one.

Thanks for your suggestions and assistance. I'll start looking online for a replacement. If you have any suggestions as to where to start, I'm certainly interested.

If you use google to search for answers to your questions, you will get answers from about 4 different web sites and this site seems to be the most common.

Just out of curiosity I checked All State Ag Parts website. My memory says they have two locations in WI, one near Green Bay and one in western WI. They show a remanufactured block, crankshaft, and long block available. I do not have their phone number handy but that should be an easy find. I am not promoting them but have purchased from them in the past with satisfactory results. Google "tractor salvage yards" for even more results. Good luck in your hunting for parts.

Be carefull I think the back or flywheel end of some C-153's are different make sure it will fit F-504

I just read your post on yt, I have a c-153 gas engine that was in a combine hasen't run in a number years. I'm in SE Mn, would like to get 500.00 dollars for it. Pete 507-269-4635

From the parts book it looks like there is only one crankshaft used for all the C153 engines.

There are four different engine blocks listed.

Block number - usage

391239R1 - 3514 tractor

375597R2 - 504 tractor

379171R2 - 93, 105, 203 combines, 210, 275, 375 windrower, and 225 hay swather

388575R2 - 444, 2444, 2444 LoBoy tractor, 4000 forklift

I do not know if any of these numbers can be used in a different application. Be sure to check the mounting bolt patterns, both front and back, before assuming you can substitute one of the other three into a 504.

Thanks Owen, this is helpful. Do you know if there is any way of finding out if the applications are interchangeable short of actually measuring the bolt patterns? Do you think IH could or would tell me?

Thanks for your help Owen. I see the block number on my 504 differs from the numbers you sent by one: 375597R1 instead of R2. Do you know if that will make a difference in whether or not the engines are interchangeable?
Thanks, Gary.

(quoted from post at 20:37:10 06/01/14) Thanks for your help Owen. I see the block number on my 504 differs from the numbers you sent by one: 375597R1 instead of R2. Do you know if that will make a difference in whether or not the engines are interchangeable?

The final letter and number(s) are a suffix to the part number. R2 instead of R1 means that there was a change somewhere in the part but the part is a replacement for the original.

A suffix with 2 digits indicates that the part number is made up of more than one piece. In the case of your engine if you look up a replacement engine block you will see the number is 375597R21. In this case the R21 indicates the part is an assembly of which 375597R2 is one of the pieces.
