200 getting starter back together

This thing is killing me. Not start no nothing. Took starter apart and found the copper wire going from a brush to to the case not in good shape, did not look burned but just pulled apart. Anyway I had an old junk starter, pulled the wire off that and put it on. Now how do I hold the brushes apart to get the armature back in. Stopped before I got frustrated, hopefully smarter minds will give me a tip or trick to get it back together.

Put it nose down in a gallon can & go from there.
Just ease the shell over the armature & work the brushes out over the commutator.

Should the brushes slide over the communicator without prying them outward with a little work or do I have to pry them out with something.

I rmove the end plate from the fields then having commutator plate free its easy to fasten it to the armature then slide the housing together with the drive end and all you need then is the two leads back to the en plate works same way with starters.

Just cock it a little to get 2 brushes started then use a small screwdriver to move the other 2 (one at a time) on. Takes about 15 seconds.

A second set of hands helps. Between the two of you, you can hold all the brushes out and slide the armature in.

Otherwise, use small zip ties to hold the brushes out.

Thanks to all, with a little luck and combining all the tips from you guys I got it. Replaced the wire and put it back together and nothing ughhhhh
Took the plate off the end and there was a brush that was wore down pretty far, all the others were fine. Replaced it with one from the junk starter and now it zips right along.
Now back to the no start issue................
