I was disassembling my Farmall 400 engine today when I came across this cracked piston in cylinder number 4. It"s amazing to me how the tractor ran fine and was even used on the auger previously to this discovery. The only reason I found it was because I am restoring it, and the current block leaked antifreeze into the oil! As seen in the picture, a piece of the ring was broken, and somehow the top edge of the piston was dented. I"m not a expert mechanic, but to me it"s amazing how I didn"t have a catastrophic engine failure.
Now my next step is to locate a replacement piston that matches the others. Does anyone have just 1 used 400 piston?

Was there any damage to the cylinder from the broken ring? If that engine has sleeves you may need a new sleeve & piston. Hal
PS: Probably should do a complete engine rebuild.

Toymaker, a W-4 is a standard model of the H. A 400 is a bit larger, it is the next tractor model following the Super MTA. Bore of a W4 is 3,375"--Farmall 400 bore. = 4,0".TractorData.com will help you out for this kind of info.

Like to see a picture of piston top or tops to give a opinion.
Need bore size, piston pin size, type of piston top or number and maker of the piston to know a suitable replacement for one hole.

Was the auger a fairly heavy load for the tractor? What you are calling a dent in the piston headland above the rings looks to me like an area that has melted due to combustion gases going past the rings. It is amazing if the engine did not make a lot of noise. If there is no real evidence of a spot on the head gasket that allowed the AF to get in the cylinders I would be sure to have the block's coolant passages pressure checked.

My guess would be mechanical interference with the head in that area. Without seeing the top of the pistons it's hard to say what it may have been. The top of the piston is deformed down enough that it broke the rings and ring lands in that area. It also pushed some of the aluminum out enough that it is rubbing on the sleeve. That is the shiny area at the top.

I have a set of propane pistons , haven't checked size but if you are interested in a full set of used one's I can . Jimmy

Most 400s have the 4.125 pistons in them. Stock was 4.000. You need to be sure which you have.

Could a nut have gotten sucked in, crashed a couple of times and blown out? What does the under side of the head look like?

I'll try to post more pictures for you today. I ordered a complete engine overhaul kit from this website so I don't need a replacement piston anymore.

Years ago , when I worked in an Oliver, White dealer shop , we ran into this frequently with the 354 Perkins diesel in the 1850 tractor and in some of the White combines. In the tractors most of them had close to or over 5000 hours on them. The engines would run fine until part of the ring got on top of the piston then you would here a knock . We called this "Termites". Well anyway , I can"t say I have seen this too often in the Farmalls . I would do a complete overhaul if it was mine because who"s to say the other pistons are not going to do the same thing? Just a thought.
