Super c camshaft stripped

Hello everyone. I bought a non running super c because I am
not smart enough to buy running good tractors. The guy I
bought it from said the camshaft gear was stripped and he
already had bought a new hydraulic pump before deciding to
sell it. I see camshaft gears and camshafts on eBay relatively
cheap. Is there any reason not to just switch it out? Mating or
bore problems?

I know the crank pulley is going to miserable. I will pull the
pan and clean.

Is the reg c cam the same camshaft and gear? I hope the
crank gear is good but will find out. I hope to make this into a
decent belly mower tractor.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

That cam gear is a press fit & you probably need to pull the cam shaft and have it pressed off & the new gear pressed on. You also need to pull the oil pump. Get a good shop manual. Also the grille, radiator & timing gear cover has to be removed. Check that damper pulley for a worn groove in the hub. You probably need a new seal in the cover and a speedi-sleeve to cover the groove in the hub. Hal

Thanks for replying. I see used camshafts with the gear on them already for close to the price of the gear. Is the reg c the same as a super c camshaft. Would that be a bad idea?

Thanks again.

No matter WHAT you chose to do, if not tearing the engine down, you will need to lift and restrain the tappets upward in the block to facilitate camshaft removal.

Yes. Gravity would be working against me. Would a heavy grease do the job or a rubber band to a dowel stick? Is it doable with engine in? Obviously push rods removed

Thanks.

I am not sure you want to hear this, but you will have less aggravation and ultimately less effort if you just pull the engine.

Others may not agree, but in the end, you will do a better job, and things will be easier. While you have the engine out, you can look at the clutch, pilot bearing, etc.

If you don't dilly-dally [b:01c55acf07]and you have the right tools[/b:01c55acf07], you can do that job in a weekend.

Here's a page from my old IH manual. It doesn't cover everything, but gives you an idea what's involved. Take pictures and separate the parts in cardboard boxes as you remove them and mark the boxes. Hal

while tracking down a used engine for a dead C I bought
with the oil pump drive gear on the cam stripped.
(and the bearings and crank ruined because of the no oil pressure)
......
I pulled the front end, pulley, front cover, oilpan, and pushrods/rockers
and yes.. the cam will come out with the rest of the engine still assembled, if you have a LOT of gentle patience. Takes all 10 fingers up inside the block, gently
jiggling the cam and pushing the lifters up with all your fingers,
and working it out a fraction at a time.
Got it out and put the front end back on to move it around til I got another engine.
Would it go back in?...dunno, anything is possible I suppose.
I'll do it on a stand now that I have the new engine installed...
