Is there a casting number or anything on the head that I can determine whether or not it's an LP head or not. I was thinking.....when I bought the tractor it had a LP manifold on it and I thought maybe it could have the LP head too. I just don't know what to look for.

Also, The manifold I used when I took the old busted one off is a one piece that has 3 pieces of iron joining the intake and exhaust, I believe someone on on here said one time that it was also an lp manifold, looked in the archives for the post, actually found it but the pics are gone, could someone post pics of the different LP manifolds?? I appreciate everything. Happy memorial day and thanks for your service

SM LP tractors used the same head casting as gasoline models. 8060DC or 8574DB. Manifold sounds like what came on 450 gas tractors and was the last type IH made to replace M to 450 gasoline ones.

So how could I tell if it is a LP head? "Last type of IH made to replace M to 450 gasoline ones" so it is a gas one to replace LP or a LP to replace gas?

This the manifold?

On a SMLP early ones used the same manifold as a gasoline SM. After that SM through 450 used a LP manifold with the intake and exhaust not joined at the center.
What most call a LP head didn't start being used until up into 400 production. Ones with the smaller combustion chamber.
Most times the head casting number is found under the valve cover near the center.
Unless the head has pockets above the manifold openings that some would hold fluid you don't have a late LP head.
Aftermarket is selling LP manifolds and heads. If you do a internet search of Farmall LP head or Farmall LP manifold lots of pictures come up.

Lp head is 8574dby. Gas is 8574dbx. Super Mlp heads had a 6.75 to 1 compression ratio. Not as much as the 6 digit lp heads. Also the super M lp heads had stellite faced exhaust valves.

No that's a gasoline manifold that fits M through 450. Only exception is gasoline manifolds were used on SM LP below serial number 25932.
After all the years any manifold that fits or works has been put on some of the tractors regardless of what came on them.
If you went to IH in say 1956 to buy a replacement manifold for a SM LP it should be the divorced middle type. Even if the serial number was below 25932.

That was a replacement casting for M through SMTA. Used to replace gasoline and SM LP heads. Only difference when used with SM LP was some where equipped with stellite faced exhaust valves and seat inserts.
8574DC was cast after the regular production of standard row crop tractors. Most have a date code on top of head above the manifold, between two of the head studs. Will tell the year cast.

Like this, month day and a letter for year. Can't recall finding a 8574 DC before 1955. Can't remember for sure but think 1967 is the latest noticed. Start with the letter A for 1955 and go up for the year, but the letter I was skipped or not used.

LP heads didn't appear until about half way thru the 400 LP production runs.
