Farmall b transmission issue

ok so the counter shaft and bevel pinion (the gear
that mates up to the differential ring gear)in the
transmission is really worn out , is it difficult to
change out ? i have a parts tractor i can take from
it, or should i just swap the complete transmission
from the parts tractor that is good,

It would be easier to swap transmission , in my opinion, the parts are heavier but if you have a lift it is simple, if not maybe someone else has experience with changing gears.

I just finished re assembling mine ( the same transmssion) and in the process replacing all the bearings and seals.
Accept for the fact that it takes time and forethought and care to take the transmission all apart, one piece at a time and reassemble it in the correct order AFTER cleaning each piece, it is a job well done and one knows that all is in good order for many years to come; one will / may not have to disassemble it in ones life time; just check for oil level and to make certain that no moisture has formed on the oil.
I would suggest going forward and do a full disassembly / parts replacement and re assembly. In the end one will KNOW that all is well.
best to you.

No it is not hard; Just follow your sight and also go to an IHC dealer and request a copy of the transmission parts for farmall A;;It is the same transmission #### 086- chassis transmission and gear shifter mechanism one page with exploded drawing and 4 pages of parts list. after that just follow your mechanical aptitude. When reassembling follow the drawing and use the top grade gasket maker from NAPA. Accept for the shims on the front of the lower shaft you need only gasket maker for re assembly between each part (((FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ""FAITHFULLY"" ON TUBE))) Have a long punch or drift in large and small diameter, a couple of thin strong pry bars a dead blow hammer and a ball-pean hammer, as well as sockets and box and open end wrenches.
Just take you time and follow what you see IHC isn't complicated. A note I didn't even use the diagrams until I came to reassembly.(Years ago I had worked on small engines and I do much of my own auto repair Until it is ""critical"" where I can't or don't have the equipment. take as many of the bearings and seals to a bearing supplier and check prices before using IHC for parts they will have identical bearings at MAY BE a better price KEEP IN TOUCH. You may have to use a small screw driver to remove the packing seal on the ones from the supplier since these will be per greased // don't worry about the grease it will be washed away when the oil hits it good for first lube before the oil starts to flow.

The problem with changing the gears that no one else has said is getting the correct backlash in the ring and pinion gears. If you don't get then correct they will first howl a lot and eventually be like the gears you took out. In the service manual it tell how to do the procedure. It is not a two minute job as you need to assemble and reassemble several times to get them set. That is what the shims are for. That is why it is probably easier to just swap the transmission as they are already set. Good luck. Roger
