Ammeter- Quick Electrical Question

Had my son pull the dash panel off of my 450 today
to install a new water temp guage. While it was
off I had him bump the starter over so I could get
at the lock bolt on the fan pulley, and when he
did there must have been a wire or terminal on the
ignition switch that was resting on sheetmetal,
because it smoked the wire from the ammeter to the
ignition switch. No power to the switch now.

Test light shows power on the batt side of
ammeter, none on the other side. Jumper wire
across the ammeter terminals lets it start and run
normal.

Did it just fry the ammeter and I need a new
one(along with a new wire to the switch), or is
there anything else that may have been messed up?

Yes. There is a modest sized conductor in the amp meter that handles almost all the current (shunt). The remainder (a very small %) goes through windings. Some are even more simple. The shunt got fried. Jim

Thanks for the quick responses below- yep, a new Ammeter is gonna be ordered sounds like.

And yes, it WAS a lot of smoke! Had an electronics teacher in college who used to say that all electronic devices ran on smoke....you let the smoke out of the wires, and they dont work anymore!
