Rear Tires diffrent size

I bought a Farmall M about 2 months ago and when I originally inquired about the tractor they said it had the 13.6 tires on it. I went looked at the tractor, bought it and have driven some since then. Anyway today I got to looking at it and it looked tilted and upon inspection found I have 1 - 13.6 & 1 - 14.9 on the rear. Both tires are in decent shape. I plan on using the tractor for tractor drives so will I be okay with my rear tires like that? I realize you will have to turn the fronts a bit to compensate and since the rear is not locked I would think I would have no problems. Thoughts?

In reality it does place a "very" slight burden on the differential. Other than the Looks,it will be fine. Plowing with the land wheel at 5% slip and the furrow wheel at 2% is far more tough on the differential than what you will do, but It might be possible to swap with someone to get a reasonable match. Differential gears will always be turning inside of differential carrier this will cause excess wear on gears, pinion shaft and differential case. I would see if you could trade tires with someone who needs one of one size and needs the other size. I have a 13.6 and a 14.9 in the Oklahoma panhandle might work out a trade.

In theory, it is possible as you say to operate the tractor like that. I bought an H one time with same situation with rear tires. I only operated tractor like that long enough to get it home. Yes, the rear end is not locked. But different size wheels is not good idea for prolonged use. Basically, the constant torque will be on one axle and constant wear will be on the related parts instead of splitting the difference upon both axles and all parts. Pick one tire or the other, and find a same sized tire to put on the other side. Would only advise running it like that long enough to find a matching tire. And hey, if your tires are good, you can sell the one you take off. You might end up only being out your trouble of switching them so to speak.

For tractor rides on hard surface you definitely want matched tires. Advertise the 14.9 for sale for $350 and when you sell it buy a new 13.6 that matches the other tire.

I often see tractors where one tire is new and the other is bald, they
are the same size but in reality one is bigger because it has 2" more
of tread on it. I wouldn't worry, but if you can find a match that
would be handy.

As other post said when plowing one wheel slips all the time more that the other it will go straight and not steer hard just fine for a tractor ride you could adjust air pressure so the axles would be the same height.

Are both rims the same width? If so, one tire is not matched to the correct rim width. That should determine which tire to switch. If the the rims are the correct width for each tire, you would then want to swap the rim and the tire out as a unit. Just make sure that the replacement rim is the same type that you are replacing. Not all rims will fit with the same clamps.

@ SDE they are the same rim width.

Thanks for the help guys. My dad does have have a 13 tire laying around, but I will have to check on the condition. Tractor may just have to wait for its first tractor drive until I can get this issue resolved.

Nothing you do to or with the tractor (except put a big bore kit and turbo on it) could even begin to wear the differential. Drive it and work it as much as you want. on a car or truck with posi and 4X4 drive it does make a difference and the difference is thousands of miles going straight, 70 mph, and steering geometry that is dependent on same size tires. The tractor meets none of these.
Imagine needing to put different size tires on a Farmall when doing contour plowing! you would need to change the tire from side to side to prevent ""wear"" when going the other direction on the side hill.
Other than the looks, it is a non event. Jim
