Were M&W brakes for an m farmall an improvement over factory set up? I saw set for sale and thought they might work on son's 400. Would there be something similar available new today?

As noted they are not compatible. The key to the disk brakes has two components:
The first is the wear related to the cover(housing) and the surface on the tractor frame. This wear contributes to the poor braking force due to bad angles on the internal linkages. The total clearance should be about .040". If the disks are thick, measure the total stack by placing the components in the housing while it is on the bench.
The amount that it is recessed into the housing is that measurement. Milling the housing surface (where it meets the tractor, reduces the measurement.
The second thing is clean smooth ball ramps, round balls, and good springs.
I hope this helps. Jim

That was what was advertized. They were supposedly M&W aftermarket brakes on an M Farmall. I now know M and 400 brakes aren't interchangeable, but would still be interested in knowing if there are better than factory brakes available for these, or if there ever were any available..just for the heck of it..

I have heard of these m&w brakes before... if they are held on by only 3 bolts they are the aftermarket brakes that were dealer installed. They were made by AUSCO LAMBERT I have a set on one of my mds, they suck and the parts for them are not availabe anywhere. The disc are not interchangable to anything else. Personally I would use them till they no longer hold then replace them with the original band brake set up. Jim

I had a set of those Ausco-Lambert brakes on a '50 H. I took them off and installed a set of the original style band brakes. The Lamberts went on the scrap pile.
