656-D Utility water in transmission hydraulics

Hello,

I have a '73 656 diesel utility w/standard transmission. In one of my costly forgetful moments, I neglected to put the dipstick back into the transmission after using my post pounder. Oh, and it rained on/off for a few days before I found that the oil filler tube was open. I am sure water got into the system, I just don't know how much.

The good news (if there is any!) is I didn't start the tractor. I didn't want the water pumped through the entire system.

So, here's what I'm going to do:

1. Drain the oil from the system using the 2 drain plugs in the transmission below. (I'm going to change the hydraulic filter too because I needed to do that anyway).

2. Since I did not start the tractor, I don't think I need to drain the hydraulic housing, just the transmission because water settles to the bottom and the filler tube on the transmission was the only source of contamination.

3. Then, I'm going to add new hydraulic fluid and get on with my life.

Any opinions on whether or not this should be sufficient in removing most if not all the water in the system?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

The water will settle to the bottom. If the oil is fairly new you could simply drain off the water until clear oil comes out, then top off the oil again with fresh stuff.

Of course if it hasn't been changed in a while, it's a good idea to change it.

There is no separate "hydraulic housing" on the tractor, unless you mean on the post pounder itself.

I really doubt that any significant amount of water got in. Milky oil is due to water that's been in there and circulated.

Thanks mkirsch!

I was so mad at myself for this error! I'll give it a try and see how much water truly comes out before just dumping the entire lot as it's very new oil.

Best,
