Three times now i have had to loosen the starter and jiggle it to get it to engage. Seems after long use it will act as if the battery is dead. there is plenty of juice in the battery, no click to the starter when pushing the starter button. I shake it and tighten it and it starts right up.

Any ideas? I am assuming it needs to be rebuilt?

I would pull the starter out and clean the drive with wd-40 check the ring gear on the engine when its out looking for bad teeth.

is the thrust washer still in the nose cone of the starter case? it could also be that the bendix is going too far and jamming into the flywheel. you can put a machine washer in there so it doesnt travel so far.

You said "not even a click" though...

If the starter was sticking, it would make one click.

I suspect bad/loose/dirty battery cable connections. Removing the starter and shaking it around reestablishes the connection.

Try taking all your connections apart and cleaning them down to nice bare copper.

No, if the starter drive is stuck in the teeth of the flywheel, it will not make even one click. I've been there.

try cleaning anything that could be grounding the starter. you may have a dirty ground. then, i suppose that you have read or will read all the rest.

pay particular attention to the ground cable and it's connections.

thanks for the advice, i will let you know what I find. Regarding the ground cable. I remember my grandpa's H freezing up one time. He loosened the starter and tightened it back up, changed the ground cable and it was fine again. My guess is the bendex needs attention.
