JD2pop,
I to am a JD owner but have had a 48 cub for quite a few years and it is a great tractor. Magnetos are not that hard to find. the last one I purchased was from a local IH dealer but they sell them on ebay and various cub parts web sites. If I were you I would look at the points and plugs too.

I would try and fix the mag that was on it before I
bought a new one. I have always had JD myself but
was given a Cub several years ago and it has become
my favorite tractor to use around the garden. I
have a plow. disk. drag, snow plow blade, field
cutivator, a sickle mower and a set of culitavaors
for mine. I use the cultivators a lot in the garden

what years had the hydraulics? did the first ones have it? are they pretty trouble free tractor. I got a JD R and I plow with it quiet a bit and not had an issue. wait had to get generator rebuilt. $300. but other than a little maintenance that is all.. cultivator, need one for my H. If i get this little tractor I would love to have one for it. thank you all for your knowledge and wisdom. Many thanks. what is a good price if it is not running for all that. tractor, plow, belly mower and sickle mower? thanks you

I too have a 49 cub. It has a belly grader blade w/live hyds. and a swinging drawbar. I use it for pulling small items and landscapeing. A fun tractor to drive.

One place that doesn't get mentioned much on the Cubs are where the front bolster bolts to the engine. They are prone to cracking right there from abuse. Got a deal on this one, with the block leaking right at the area where I described. Had a buddy weld up the crack and shes been fine since. Heres my sons 49. It had hydraulics, but I removed them since they were just plain wore out, and budget was limited on this one. It did have new tires already, so basically a seal and gasket and paint job.

I am working on a 47 cub right now. Mags are the same for most of the smaller IH tractors and are abundant. Take yours to the local auto electric shop and check into rebuilding.. Also the is a cub website Farmallcub.com. Tons of info there. You can also get manuals to download for free there
