1948 A-V runs (poorly) on 2 cylinders.

Started this spring, would not fire on 1 & 4.
Then she "come out of it", but misfired a bit and lacked oomph. Idles
fair with idle mix screw all the way in. Rotated
magneto to get slightly better performance.

Now it's back to running on 2 jugs. I had to
retime it before, as there is a chronic problem of
timing slipping, which I'll need to address,
probably now.

It may be a gross timing issue, as the carb is new,
and seemed to run ok last year.

Any ideas on this? Thanks.

Have you checked for fire to cylinders 1&4 when the engine is running? If you have fire, I would check the compression on those two cylinders. You may have worn cam lobes. Hal

Are you sure the wires are in order. #1 wire is at the 1oclock position on the cap then next is #3 then #4 then#2 in clockwise rotation. There is no way to advance spark without moving gears that turn the rotor then it will not start very well. That mag fires on TDC then when engine runs if goes to 32 or so deg advance and thats the way they work. Check your wires and have you done a compression checkare the valves set correct at 14 thous playing with the mag will not fix your problem it either fires or not at all.
