400 belt pulley shaft seal

To change the seal on the pulley shaft, I gather you have to remove the assembly and take the gear off the shaft to get it out. Will the shaft come out by taking the bolts out of the cover where the seal is and pulling the shaft out? That would be too easy.

take bolts out of seal flange pull assenbly out . take apart replace seal.

Taking the bolts out of the flange will let the shaft come out but if I remember right the the long center bolts that hold the housing down have to be pulled up out of the way as they catch on the bevel gear. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
