H connecting rod bolt lock tab

Happy Friday everyone...

Got a quick question. As I've been cleaning up the oil pan after removing it for a deep clean, I noticed that some of the locking tabs on the connecting rod bolts are pretty mangled. They don't feel loose or anything so I'm wondering if it is worth my time to replace the ones that look the worst (as in the picture), or just let it go.

as always, thanks in advance for any advice!

The reason they look like that is the rod caps have been taken off a time or two and the same tabs were re-used. As long as they are not broke off and are positioned so the rod bolt can't unscrew, they are just fine and I would just leave them. Maybe replace with new if you ever tear the engine down to the point of taking the rod caps off.

The right answer of course is to replace them
while you're in there, no arguing that.

But...

I personally wouldn't bother.

I don't think they're going to go anywhere, and
even if they came off, they'd just sit at the
bottom of your oil pan. At most they'd jam into
something, but they're so soft, it wouldn't much
matter.

if this is a good running tractor with constant good oil pressure,
I'd just leave it be. Breaking or stripping a worn rod cap bolt to just change those clips will ruin your day.

With that said, when I buy a tractor, especially a Farmall where it is so easy.....and I have the oil pan off for cleanup....
dunno..can't resist I guess.
At a minimum, I'll put new rod bearings in (same size that are in there) Then plane the oil pump cover plate, and put a new gasket in it.
Peace of mind for under a hundred bucks.
(And every time, I didn't...I regretted it later)

old parts get labeled and saved. Got an engine right now that is not worth a single dime. But with my old 'not too bad' bearings and engine parts collection, it's going together with all used parts. Correct...no, will it run and be useable..yes
