got the super m running last night and went this evening to pull the disk with it and put it in 5th gear and it spit and backfire like she didn't want to do it. so hooked up disk and went on to disking well could go deep at all she was doing the something spinning and backfiring. and the owner said that he had a hard trying to go into 5 gear. what's the problem carb still???

Fifth gear is a 18mph road gear it does not pull a disk. If the tractor is running all adjustments can be made (a good thing)
If the gasoline in it has been in it a long time (a year) fresh gasoline is needed before any adjustments are made.
Timing is important and so is the centrifugal advance. The rotor should turn just a few degrees then spring back to where it was. if it does not spring, or stays turned (just 10 degrees or so) the centrifugal advance is probably toast, and it will not run correctly. It is important to static time the engine to TDC.
Assuming a distributor, not a mag ignition, the points are set at .020" when the rubbing block has them as open as it can. (hand turn the engine to the high point on the 4 lobe distributor cam)
Once the gap is correct, put the #1 (front) piston at TDC on the compression stroke, This should be the exact position that the breaker points just begin to open with the rotor pointing to #1. With the ignition on, the distributor should be turned till a light or volt meter shows voltage at the side terminal of the distributor. Go back and forth to find this exact location, the light or meter should flicker as the points just open. Tighten the distributor. Turn off the ignition.
The load screw on the bottom front of the carb adjusts the flow of fuel under load. it is adjusted to allow clean acceleration from idle to full speed with no hesitation, but no black smoke. For full load running it can be out a little more.
A timing light is needed to check the centrifugal advance at speed. Check the manual to assess the correct full advance timing. Jim

Make sure you have the plug wires in their correct
firing order on the distributor cap. Should
be in this firing order:
2-1
4-3 As the rotor rotates CW

Open your main jet adjusting screw near the bottom
of the carburetor. This will enrich your fuel mixture. Open it until it smokes under load then close it some. Hal

Sorry meant to say that I was going to hook up disk and put in 5th and jumps and spits bad and she sounds about like a john Deere popper when you put it gear but sounds ok when it's not in gear

Start in 4th, go to full 4th gear speed, and gently shift to 5th, they do not like to start in 5th at all. It will grind a little, take it easy and it will shift to 5th. Jim

After reading all of your posts, you still need to REBUILD the carb. If your not comfortable doing it, have it rebuilt by a competent mechanic, or purchase one ready to bolt on.. The main thing is it has to be CLEAN.

This is why a little effort with your grammar and sentence structure can be helpful. Your run-on sentence is confusing, and you have people thinking that you are trying to pull the disk through the field in 5th gear!!!

Don't get indignant. Effort, not perfection. Throw a period in here and there. Hit the enter key once in a while.

You've got timing, ignition and/or carburetor problems. Carburetor is where I'd start.

(quoted from post at 19:08:09 05/15/14) 5th is road gear, not for field work.

I believe he was trying to say he was driving empty in 5th to where the disk was parked so he could hook up to it, not pull the disk in the field. Then when he tried to pull the disk in a lower gear it acted up when under a load.
