Farmall F-12 carb problems

Hi, I just replaced the needle valve and seat in the carburetor
in my F-12 and it still isn't getting any gas. The float is new
and both the needle valve and seat are new. When I put gas in
the air intake of the carb it starts fine but then stalls once
the gas is used up. What could be the problem? The carb is
adjusted properly and i had it running before it began acting up
and I know I have gas to the carb. The gas tank is dirty but I
got it started on gas from the tank and the filters are clean so
I don't think that is the problem. I did notice that on the
float there is a piece that sticks out that will lock the float
in the up position if it slides over just a bit. What is the
purpose of this and is there a way to prevent it from locking? I
think this may be the problem. Thanks for all the help.

Im trying to remember, but the float shouldnt slide over. Id guess if its hanging on that little piece, since it sliding over, thats the problem. Hows the fuel pump?

I thought so. I just don't know how to keep it from sliding over. I guess i could put a small spring in to keep it over but is there a proper way? Does anyone know how it was kept to the side so it didn't lock? I just fully rebuilt the fuel pump so i don't think that's the problem.

I realize you just rebuilt the fuel pump, but recheck and make sure the check valves are in properly, step by step check for fuel flow from tank through fuel pump.

I know its not the fuel pump since I have fuel up
to the carb and the bowl is full now that I made
sure the float was not locked. I think it may just
be a dirty gas tank now. I pumped some fuel into a
glass jar and its nearly as dark as coffee. Does
anyone have a good way to clean the gas tank? I
have cleaned it out with gas and diesel several
times before i put it on but as I see now it is
still dirty. I put some of the gas from the tank
right in the carb and it wouldn't fire but it did
when I put fresh gas in. I know the needle valve
was a problem but i'm guessing that the gas tank
made the fuel go bad from sitting over a month. So
are there any cheaper ways to clean and seal the
gas tank than the expensive sealer? Thanks.

I don't remember there being enough room for the float to ride over. May need to squeeze the piece, on the carb body, the pin goes through in some.

Okay, then it may have been just the needle valve but I know it did keep locking when I put the carb back together. I tried squeezing the clamp that the pin goes through but it still moves. Would a small spring work to keep it from locking? I think it also may be the gas went bad. I put some of the gas from the fuel tank in the carb and it wouldn't start until I put in fresh gas. Is there any way to clean the tank and seal it without spending lots on the expensive name brand sealers? Thanks for all the help.

just from what you are saying about dirty gas is your problem. all it takes is a spec of dirt to flow into carb and you are in trouble. these carbs with the fuel pumps are more prone to problem. the fuel is pumped into carb under pressure and is always stirred up. excess fuel is returned to tank. soo... you have to start right at tank and make sure it is clean. make sure fuel pump works. check flow and pressure. a needle valve cannot be the problem,... its the stuff plugging it is the problem. take your tank to a rad shop and they will boil it out in caustic. you will never get it cleaned by flushing with gas or diesel. the rust flakes just keep falling of and go into the carb. good idea to put an inline filter before carb also. most of those sediment bowl screens got thrown out. and then once tank is cleaned, if required it can be sealed.

Okay. Thanks. It has both filters but i probably will just have it boiled clean. I just need to find a place that does it as i dont know of any near here. Thanks.

A spring might put to much pressure on it and keep it from working right. I havent had to clean a gas tank in some time, but for a little surface rust, E85 does a good job. I had one that I filled, still on the tractor, then drained it after a few days, straining it through a rag, then put it back in and did that a couple of times, maybe 3, then dumped it in my M and ran it out. (Looked a little dirty colored, but no flaky stuff. Wasnt any more trash in my inline filter than normal.Yes I do have one on my M, so correct police get over it)
