47 Farmall M carb problems

HELP! My Dad and I just finished restoring my grandfather's 1947 Farmall M. It was running fine for a while, but now when we try to start, it runs for a bit then shuts off. If I idle up a couple notches, it'll run then slow down and randomly speed up to keep running then shut off again. When I mess with the carb screws, it runs fine, but I have to mess with the carb screws every time I try to start it. I tried to set the carb to factory settings suggested on these forums, but they aren't right for this tractor. I'm not even sure which screw I should be tweaking the most. It runs rich when it runs right. It has new plugs, wires, points, condenser.

FIrst take the plug out of the carb bowl and see if you get a steady stream (catch it to see if dirt or water is in the carb) let it flow for at least one minute. If it slows or stops, the supply side is partially plugged. if it runs out nice, the main jet is probably dirty. Clean and blow out ( and chase with fine wire) the passages. Jim

in addition to what Jim has posted, also check to see that the governor shaft is corrected seated into the throttle seat. Having that "out of time" will produce problems as well. It does sound like you have a fuel delivery issues, but doesn't hurt to check.

To do what Tom suggests you need to take the carburetor off the tractor. There is a little square peg protruding from the governor tube that needs to fit into a notch in the front of the carb where they bolt together.

It can be a pain to get it right because you have to slide that together at the same time you're trying to get the carb over the studs on the manifold.
